When I was 5, we lived in North Carolina and this lovely little used bookstore sat in what used to be a small house on the side of a highway just outside of town. This place was a treasure trove of where you could trade in your books for credit towards new to you books they already had on the shelf, or you could just buy the books on the shelf. Prices were nearly always half the cost of the book's cover price, so if it was an older edition with a cover price of say 50 cents, you paid 25 cents, while a newer edition might say $1.50 so you would pay 75 cents.
