Jacob Taverner is a millionaire nearing the end of his life. Although he comes from a huge family, a family row split everyone up many years before and few of them are in touch. Jacob puts an advert in the paper and invites those who respond to an inn (The Catherine Wheel of the title) on the coast for a weekend's holiday. The family are rather an eclectic mix; from station porters to ladies of leisure and from the start, it is clear that they are unlikely to get on all that well.
