Advantages: Very Amusing and Emotional too
Disadvantages: none
This book is a lovely memoir of one family, written from the perspective of the mother, Marilyn Edwards and the cats in their life during this period.
The book focuses on their two very different cats. Septi, who they have had for many years, a loyal and friendly cat. Septi has lived at Moon Cottage for many years on his own so his life (and the lives of the family) are disrupted when Otto, a new kitten is brought into their home. Otto is a beautiful tortoise shell cat who is feisty, inquisitive and out-going in nature. This comes as a shock to Septi who enjoyed his quiet solitude and domain over the cottage as 'top-dog' and it takes a while for a relationship to develop between the two cats as Septi grows to accept him.
This book is a must for cat-lovers, for anyone that has owned cats it will make them nod their head in agreement and laugh at the amusing ways cats keep us entertained. Any animal lover will also understand the bond that a person can have with their pet and the unique relationship this is - and how any pets can offer us comfort, affection and love. This book is very entertaining, Otto's antics mean this has laugh-out loud moments but as this follows their whole lives, expect some sad moments as well. Marilyn Edwards is a fantastic observer of cat behaviour and is also a very good writer; she writes these memoirs full of descriptive prose so it keeps it interesting for any reader, not just people who love cats!
This book could be compared to books such as 'Marley and Me' and 'A Dog Life' but I did enjoy the fact that this one is based around cats since they are my favourite animals.
My copy was the Hodder and Stoughton 2003 hardback Edition - which would make a delightful gift for fellow cat-lovers. It includes black and white illustrations (BY Peter Warner) throughout the book which help characterise the two different cats and adds a unique charm to the book.
This is the first book in a series and all 4 have been published in these hardback versions so it would also make a fabulous collection. These have also been published in paperback combining all four books in just two volumes, so they are even better value. For people who love these books it is also worth visiting the authors website as she has included many photographs of the actual cats themselves.
Overall, this is a great quick read - both equally heartwarming and amusing.
Summary: A cosy, charming tale.
