Advantages: Extremely interesting. A great read

Disadvantages: Maybe not the big celebrity expose its been described as by others

I admit it, my weakness is Heat magazine. Every Tuesday I find myself at the newsagent buying this as it's seriously addictive read. For those of you not familiar with Heat Magazine it is basically a celebrity gossip magazine, but the content is so varied is appeals to all ages ranges. It was launched in February 1999 and I bought the first issue and have bought it ever since.

This book is written by Mark Frith who was the editor of Heat, during the time this book was written. It is a very interesting read and tells you what was going on behind the scenes and gives a good insight into journalism.

Because I am such a dedicated reader of Heat, I can recall particular covers and events that have occurred during the past 5 years period this book covers, but even if I wasn't it would be highly interesting.

These days Heat is the number one "Big Brother" magazine, and features all the latest reality stars, but the first period of this books covers before Big Brother and reality shows dominated the TV and magazines, and explained how the rise of reality stars began, and it's interesting to remember that there were celebrities way before the days of Nasty Nick and co....

There are some great pictures in this book as well, and many reminders of some of the old Heat covers. Theres are few stand out bits in this, like the wedding where they guessed the venue and date and got it completely wrong. Theres also detail on when Heats magazine circulation dropped so low that they were almost finished, and an interview with one particular celebrity saved them.

All in all, Mark Frith recognises how these days anybody can be a celebrity and appear on the cover of a magazine, and whilst it doesn't offer as many revelations and new information as I expected but it is still an extremely interesting read.

Summary: A must for any Heat fan

I really dislike Heat - its written for 9 year olds as far as I am concerned. Shame that interview saved them.
