I was having a bit of a book buying splurge recently in my local PDSA charity shop when I came across an author whose name I thought I recognised from my heaving shelves at home, I couldn't place his books but the artwork on the cover and information on the back caught my interest so I decided to squander the 30p and buy it. The Cipher Garden by Martin Edwards is a bit of a strange book really. I was correct in recognising the author as I have read several of his Harry Devlin crime thrillers and enjoyed them, but this isn't a Harry Devlin and by losing his main character I found he had lost much of the excitement and charm from his work.
