... are good. Often this is neglected by books that assume the reader is already pregnancy when buying it. However, there are a lot of us around who get so excited at the thought of having a baby that we want to read about it before it has actually happened. This book is good from that point of view. The fertility section is pretty comprehensive. Though it convinced me I couldn't have children before we had even started trying! But if you are genuinely having problems conceiving, this will cover the main areas ...more

Premium Review The Complete Guide to Pregnancy and Birth - Dr Miriam Stoppard: A week by week pregnancy! (1036 words)

I am not sure if this is the same book as reviewed by others. It is the Dr Miriam Stoppard s Complete Pregnancy and Birth Handbook. It is a Dorling Kindersley publication. My particular edition is the revised 2000. The cost of the book was £5.99. The cover of the book is paper. It is white with a lovely picture of Dr Stoppard herself and a happy baby, a happy mum and a happy dad! How nice! Not stereotypical at all! Oh no!! Unfortunately this element is the one thing I hate about Miriam Stoppard, her old fashioned values of the nuclear family! Euch! Any way back to the book, the first page is a beautiful picture of a mummy kissing a sleeping ...  Read the complete review

Back when everyone lived in large, extended families, the odds were that even if you didn't know anything about sex, you knew all about the results. Most women would approach their first baby armed with a wealth of second hand information. These days, many women have never held a baby, changed a nappy or seen anyone breastfeed before they approach parenthood themselves. As we live in smaller families and have less expereince of other people's babies, we have to get our knowledge from somewhere. (some people of course will opt to try and get through without swatting up, but most women like to have some idea of what's going on and it does help if you ...  Read the complete review

I was leant this book by a friend of mine when I first started trying for a baby. It was great in the early days, as it was my only pregnancy book and it was all new and exciting. I knew nothing and wanted to read everything. Back then, I thought that it was quite a good book. Now I have changed my mind and it is one of many pregnancy books in the bedroom. I haven't dipped into it for weeks. It just isn't up to the standards of the others I have. POSITIVES It covers most things that you will need to know and the earlier sections on pre-pregnancy are good. I was lent this book by a friend when I was pregnanct and I have to say I wasnt exactly impressed. I hvae read other books on pregnancy and birth and have them them to be far easier to use and much more appropriate to what I was going through. I found the book took a one way stance in that you will be like this and often i wasnt, whereas other books were more you may be like this or like this, which I find more helpful. I have found even more since having my little boy that there is more than one way to parent. I have seen interviews on the television with her sicne I had my little boy and I havent found her information to be useful or accesible to me. ...  Read the complete review

The Complete Guide to Pregnancy and Birth by Dr Miriam Stoppard, has become my "bible" for both of my pregnancies! It is like having your own midwife on your bedside table! The book has excellent coverage of all aspects of pregnancy and birth including planning for a succesful and healthy pregnancy. I personally like to week by week guide to the 40 weeks and gives measurements of the fetus/baby and explains in detail what you can expect to be experiencing and feeling at each stage! Many a time i have referred to this book and have found the exact answer i have been looking for e.g why was i getting headaches, when should my ...  Read the complete review
