Advantages: Reference book for all aspects of conception, pregnancy and birth

Disadvantages: Dr Miriam Stoppard is a bit patronising.

I bought this book before I was pregnant and it was interesting to read all about preparing for pregnancy, the developing baby, antenatal care, common complaints and also the birth itself. It carries on to tell about your newborn baby and also the big one about adjusting to parenthood.

Its a comprehensive guide which starts at the very beginning, you know the birds and bees bit, and also tells about fertility problems, genetic counselling, IVF and also the devestating bits of miscarriage. Its nice to have a book that tells it like it is, and you can follow every week the change in your baby and what to expect. I think that for the first baby its great as you really don't know whats around the corner each week, but it also puts a bit of worry in your mind in case you feel things that are not listed, as when you are pregnant for the first time you really have no idea about anything and everything is a worry ! I sometimes felt that Dr Miriam Stoppard is a bit, well, patronising at times and really wish she had concentrated a bit more on Caesarean's as this was how I chose to have Jack (Due to medical problems) and felt that only 2 pages about it was not enough.

Its great to have a reference book like this but I don't think I will use it for the next one (HA, HA) The baby mags you can buy each month are far better for detail about the actual pregnancy.
