Advantages: Pace, Historical Revelation

Disadvantages: Characterisation

Harvard Professor Richard Langdon is called late one night to a gruesome murder in the Lourve, which starts a series of events, which lead him and French cryptologist Sophie Neveu on a hunt to uncover an amazing historical discovery. But Opus Dei, an extreme religious sect has involved its self and wants this historical find for its own ends.

The Da Vinci Code is a unique thriller in which the thrills instead of coming from a big action fight or courtroom drama come from historical revelations as they try to crack the code that will take them closer to their quarry. This book moves along at a terrific speed from the first few pages to the very last one.

The plot element in this book mainly deals with the occupation of the main character, Relgious Symbiology. Not knowing much about the subject I was taken aback by some of the revelations brought up the book. Your basic reaction is Can this be True? It makes you want to go out and find more about it. Whether you are religious or not the whole of Christian history is well known to nearly all of us. As a history lesson it was fascinating.

The characterisation is pretty thin but then there is little time for build up and many of the revaluations discovered directly effect Sophie?s life. We don?t really get to know much about Langdon?s character his main use in the story to explain the background to the history.

The reason why this is such a good page-turner is that the pace is excellently handled while we are being told unknown facts about our own history, while actually making it an interesting book to read.

I would urge anyone to give this a read it will keep you on the edge of your seat from the first page to the last.
