This book is the account by a Catholic nun, Sister Helen Pejean of how she became the spiritual advisor to men awaiting execution on death row and eventually witnessed their executions. The book opens in 1982 when Sister Helen is working in an inner city housing project in New Orleans and is asked to write to a death row inmate. Because of her experience of working with people living in extreme poverty, she sees how easy it is to fall into a life of crime. She agrees and starts writing to Elmo Patrick Sonnier, a man who along with his brother Eddie have committed many crimes including the abduction of a young couple from a lovers lane.
