I first became aware of Ambrose Bierce’s The Devils Dictionary whilst watching Channel 4`s Countdown a good few years ago. Philip Franks, (he of the darling buds of may fame), was in the guests chair in Dictionary corner and would supplement his post ad-break ramblings with quotes from said tome, much to the amusement of myself and many others. I made a point of seeking out the book the next time I was able, and was thrilled to secure the lexicon from WHSmith at a very reasonable £2, a price that looks an even better bargain every time I sample the delights of the book.
