Having read and been so impressed by several of Margaret Atwood s works of fiction, I imagined that a book written by her about the art or activity of writing would prove to be an interesting read. As explained in the introduction and prologue to the book, the chapters here are based on the Empson Lectures given by the writer at the University of Cambridge in the year 2000. Chapter 1, entitled Who do you think you are? is mainly autobiographical, tracing Atwood s early years from her birth in Ottawa in 1939 up until her undergraduate student days at Victoria College, the University of Toronto. One of my all time favourite books, Margaret Atwood s Lady Oracle skips through decades, countries, boyfriends and occupations of it s leading lady. Born in Canada, she is constantly thriving to express herself throughout life and therefore adopts a number of different roles - the fat kid, the loyal wife, the exciting girlfriend to a Russian count, and a secret, although successful, author of romantic period fiction. This career epitomises her yearning for excitement and romance, and all the delicious emotions that are felt by the heroines she writes about. to sit down and consider who she really is. Will she find herself? Will she find her father? And will things ever return to normal again? Margaret Attwood is, without a doubt, a brilliant writer and I have enjoyed several of her books, most notably Blind Assassin, The Handmaid s Tale and Alias Grace. She has written a couple of duds though - I remember Bodily Harm as being particularly pointless. As Surfacing is one of her earlier pieces of work, I wasn t really sure what to expect, but obviously hoped it would be up there with my favourites.
