The character at the centre of this novel (Theo Griepenkerl) is arrogant, short-sighted and unlikeable - but this is entirely deliberate. After making the stunning discovery of a fifth gospel, apparently published before any of the other gospels in the New Testament, Theo's sole concern is how to wrench money and fame from his discovery.
