Characters
Lucy Hathaway – the main character in the book, she is a true believer in “free love” and the suffragette movement. She brings her child Maggie up to be a straight honest talker, who is full of confidence and enjoys bike rides with her daughter. Lucy is a bookseller who actively encourages meetings for the suffragette movement in her area to congregate at her shop and participates in parades. She is a well educated woman who has fallen on hard times because of the fire.
