The Plague - Albert Camus
by Nolly - written on 18/04/01 (Very useful, 372 readings)
Rating:
I was seventeen years old when I first read Albert Camus' novel about an outbreak of bubonic plague in the Algerian city of Oran, when I read it as part of my A-Level French studies. It had such an effect on me that I now have copies of it in both French and English. Albert Camus was Algerian and won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1957. His other works include 'The Rebel', 'The Fall' and 'The Outsider'. He was tragically killed in a car crash in 1960. 'The Plague' can be read on several levels. It can be seen as a straight narrative story, or as an allegory of the German occupation of France in the 1940's. It can also be ...

The Outsider - Albert Camus
by Jemmanic - written on 02/02/01 (Useful, 160 readings)
Rating:
a little more comfortable, but the terrible truth of what is being said can make you uneasy. The factors balance things out to make this book a readable and exciting book for any age or taste. I would love to read The Rebel to see if Albert Camus is a fantastic alrounder, judging by this book, he is. I thought it was an achievement just to read this book for fun, but my friend read it in French and now i feel sheepish, oh ell, at least i enjoyed it. ...

The Outsider - Albert Camus
by thoamy - written on 08/07/00 (Very useful, 144 readings)
Rating:
he doesn't really feel any overpowering emotions as a result of his mother's death, or indeed as a result of anything. Through Meursault's voice, and through his interactions with others, Albert Camus attempts to demonstrate the absurdity of life (or so the blurb would have us believe) - and at the very least he suceeds in making you ponder. I did genuinely find myself sitting about and pondering for periods after reading the book. Having never studied the book, again I can't really comment on its philosophical or literary value, but I can say that I found the end of the book, and as a result the entire text, particularly moving. I recommend reading ...
