The Scarlett Pimpernell is the firs novel to feature the famous English adventurer. The Scarlett Pimpernell (TSP from this point) was written by Baroness Orczy in about 1908, and is set during the period of the French revolution. TSP is the best known of the Scarlett Pimpernell novels, though Baroness Orczy wrote about 10 books on her famous character. TSP starts with the disillusioned French women Marguerite St Just who is married to the English fop Sir Percy Blackeney. Marguerite is disillusioned with her husband because she forced a French aristocrat and his family to the guillotine, Percy was a friend of the aristocrat and his disgust of her acts has driven a wedge ...

with open fists and swords. The writing does take the reader back to those days; the chapters are long on description and perhaps a bit short on action. Baroness Orczy never uses one word when twenty would do as well, and the novels tend to be centred on the wife of TSP rather than TSP. I suspect Margeuritte is the Baroness or how she would like to be seen, beautiful intelligent and resourceful with more than a hint of open desire for her dashing bold husband. The novel ends with him taking her in his arms and kissing her neck, one is left with the thought that the next few paragraphs would have to be blacked out for younger eyes if it continued.
