In the Company of Cheerful Ladies - Alexander McCall Smith
by sunmeilan - written on 12/07/06 (Very useful, 67 readings)
Rating:
it does make for pleasant and light reading – ideal for on public transport or on the beach. I also enjoy the backdrop of Botswana and its gentle customs. McCall Smith spent some time in the country, and his first-hand experience does shine through. He has probably done more for the country’s image than any tourist board could do. I can’t really give this book any more than three stars. If you have not read any of the series, I would definitely not recommend that you start with this one. I did enjoy the book, but I can’t see it winning any great literary prizes and it didn’t encourage me to seek out any of the other books in the series that I have not yet read. Nor ...

The Sunday Philosophy Club - Alexander McCall Smith

Rating:
The many people – myself included – who loved Alexander McCall Smith’s “No 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency” series may approach “The Sunday Philosophy Club” with some trepidation. After all, Edinburgh is a far cry from Botswana, and McCall Smith’s heroine Isabel Dalhousie is – at least on the surface – a very different character from the now much-loved Precious Ramotswe. As this is not a review of the Ladies’ Detective Agency books, and as I can’t assume all readers of this review have read those books (though I’m sure some have), I’ll avoid the temptation to take a “compare and contrast” essay type approach to reviewing “The Sunday Philosophy Club”. I’ll just quickly say ...

The Sunday Philosophy Club - Alexander McCall Smith

Rating:
I have loved reading Alexander McCall Smith s tales of Botswana s No. 1 Lady Detective, Precious Ramotswe. I can entirely understand their popularity. I m very much looking forward to the TV series that is being made for broadcast next year. The No 1 Ladies Detective Agency series is not his only novels. He has also wrritten a series of books that were grouped together as an omnibus under the title of 2 ˝ Pillars of Wisdom, of which the most famous novel is probably Portuguese Irregular Verbs. The Sunday Philosophy Club is the first in a new series, featuring a new character, Isabel Dalhousie. Unlike his other novels, the story is set in Britain, in Edinburgh. ...
