Chemistry, once a wonder science that could accomplish miracles, has a bad reputation nowadays. The popular and tabloid press often promotes the view that 'chemicals' are evil, and chemists are mad or incompetent scientists out to poison us. The truth is, of course, a bit more balanced than this. Chemistry is, on the whole a force for good in the world, with medicines, materials, water purification, and food production increases, all due to chemicals. It is, however, true that improperly utilised, chemicals can be fatal. Dr Joe Schwarcz is a chemistry professor and writer who spends his time trying to tell the truth about chemicals.
