      A good Vintage story

First published by Hamish Hamilton in 1953 and written by L.P. Hartley.
I brought a copy of this book in paperback form from by local charity shop. The copy I own is a Penguin reprint from 1973. I can remember reading The Go-Between when I was a teenager, as this was many years ago I decided to read it once again.

The story begins when an old man ,Leo Colston, finds an old diary from 1900 in an old box. As he reads through the diary he takes the reader back in time to the events of the first seven months of 1900 after this time the rest of the diary is blank.
Leo starts 1900 with great enthusiasm for the new century as a 12 year old public schoolboy. Unfortunately the year soon goes wrong ,he is bullied at school . He seeks to get revenge on his tormentors and succeeds thus making him one of the more popular boys in his year and this leads to his friendship with Marcus Maudsley.
Leo is invited to stay with Marcus and his family in their country home in Norfolk during the summer holidays. Marcus`s family are much wealthier than poor Leo and his widowed mother. However Leo soon fits in with the Maudsley family and the other guests who are staying at Brandham Hall. Marcus has a brother Denys and sister Marian who are both older than him.
When Marcus gets suspected measles Leo is left to explore by himself and gets to know the local farmer who is a tenant of Brandham Hall.It is not long before certain people start to take advantage of Leo`s good nature and naivity. There is a scandal and a tragedy that Leo feels he is responsible for and poor Leo has a breakdown.

When the old Leo reads the diary he decides it is time to put things to right , leading to yet another adventure with the remaining Maudsley family members.
