Advantages: emotional rollercoaster that has you gripped from start to finish

Disadvantages: some of the darker storylines had me sobbing!

The Godmother is Carrie Adams' first novel. Published by Headline Review it is the prequel to 'The Godmother' which I have recently reviewed.

Born in London in 1970 Carrie Adams was educated at both Durham University and Birmingham University. She is married to theatre producer Adam Spiegel, who is responsible for putting Dirty Dancing on the London stage (I digress- Ive seen it and its FAB - I love this guy!) They have three daughters and live in London.
The Godmother was published in 2006 and the sequel The Stepmother in 2008.

The novel is available in paperback from amazon for £5.99. Its 22 chapters over 406 pages, definately a chick lit, definately an easy read for the hoildays.

The Godmother is the story of Tessa King and her circle of friends, aptly named as she is Godmother to at least one child belonging to each friend.
She tries to tell herself that shes more than happy with her four godchildren. There's Caspar, once such a sweet boy now a pot smoking, thieving teenager who's parents cant seem to get through to anymore. The oh-so-cute and extremely clever Cora who lives with mum, struggling to make ends meet and crying wolf once too often to Coras estranged father. Finally the newborn twins, Bobby and Tommy who thankfully are just too young to remeber that their dad is an arse and their mother quite the depressive.
But deep down, all this girl-about-town party animal wants is to settle with a decent guy and have children of her own. Or does she? Afterall children are perfect if you can give them back. Right?

To her friends, Tessa seems footloose and carefree but all Tessa wants is to be like them. At one point she even convinces herself that she wants to be with her best friend Ben despite the fact that his wife is perfect for him!

Unlike most chick-lits, this book also touches on the darker topics. Its certainly not life through rose tinted spectacles and its certainly not all happy-ever-after.
From the problem teenage child, mothers who didnt know how to love, adultery, one night stands, drugs, miscarriage, depression and even the death of a loved one. This book has it all and in shocking reality it can have you laughing one minute and then crying from one chapter to the next. A real emotional rollercoaster!

I couldnt put this book down and read it over a weekend. I love Carries style of writing. I felt engaged from the first page and thoroughly recommend this to any chick-lit fans and even those who like just that little bit more from their books!

Well done Carrie - cant wait to see what you come up with next!

Summary: The Godmother - not at all like The Godfather!
