The Gruffalo - Julia Donaldson
This is perhaps the most famous of her books and after reading it 6 months ago I can see why. Immediately it had me hooked with its expressive text and its gently rhyming words. After many readings I think I can probably recite it off by heart!
The story
The mouse took a stroll through the deep dark wood... the mouse is a small unassuming creature who is propositioned several times on his quiet walk through the wood. Each time he declines courteously saying that he was off to have tea/supper/dinner with a Gruffalo. He describes a part of the Gruffalo each time and suggests that the Gruffalo likes to eat that particular animal. However, what will happen if the Gruffalo turns out to be real...
The story is very clever and extremely funny. It is illustrated by Axel Shefler like many of her other books and there is also an audio version that is read by Imelda Staunton.
Summary: The classic from Julia Donaldson.
