In a curious twist of fate, the heroes for over 60 books, the Hardy Boys, becomes suspects in this, the 64th Hardy Boys book. In 1979, Simon & Schuster took over the rights to publish new Hardy Boys books, and as this is the 6th they have published, it is often referred to as the 6th overall. The Hardy Boys are brothers Frank and Joe Hardy, sons of detective Fenton Hardy, formerly a police detective and now working for himself.
