Advantages: Well written

Disadvantages: A little dated

This 29th volume of the Hardy Boys series is a nice distraction from the usual cases investigated in the present tense. The name Franklin W Dixon is the pen name used by the ghost writers of the Hardy Boys books throughout their many volumes, although Leslie McFarlane used this pen name for 20 or so books before hanging up and passing over the mantle of the Hardys writer to other ghost writers.

The Secret of the Lost Tunnel sees an attempt by the next ghost writer to give us something different with the brother Frank and Joe Hardy, sons of famous sleuth and private detective Fenton Hardy, upon whom a plethora of mysteries always seems to fall. In this adventure, the brothers are at the site of an old Civil War battle, where they aid in trying to prove the innocence of an old war veteran who was convicted of a serious crime.

It is the type of Hardy Boys story that deserves credit for going outside the box and doing something different, and it is a successful foray back into the past as opposed to going with the mould and sticking to a current sleuthing story. There are elements where the present naturally comes into it, and there are, of course, some who would rather the secret stayed a secret, and of course, due to the title, the answer lies in the dangerous and unfound underground Lost Tunnel.

Danger beckons once more in this tale for Frank and Joe, and I highly recommend this book as one of the better Hardy Boys stories. The book is available in paperback form amazon.co.uk for a very low price, but hardback Hardy Boys books are going for quite high prices these days.

Summary: The 29th Hardy Boys book
