Advantages: Well written
Disadvantages: A bit outdated
I sometimes wonder where inspiration for many of today's cartoons come from. One particular cartoon is Scooby Doo, with its wacky team and strange concept of how criminals nearly get away with things, only to be thwarted by the team. And a similar thing may be said of the Hardy Boys mysteries to a certain extent, although they may indeed be part of the inspiration behind a lot of more modern sleuthing tales.
In this book, Frank and Joe are launched into yet another mystery, intrigued following rumours of piracy deep in Georgia. They start their investigation near the lake that is rumoured to house some piracy activity, and before long they find themselves deep in trouble as criminal activity and eerie 'sea monsters' start to emerge, threatening to either get rid of the boys or simply just eat them! The brothers must use all their sleuthing wiles to survive this adventure and work out just exactly what is going on in Georgia.
The Hidden Harbor Mystery is the 14th Hardy Boys book. The books follow the adventures of Frank and Joe Hardy, sons of fictional supersleuth Fenton Hardy, and are written by Franklin W Dixon, the pen name of Leslie McFarlane.
The books will to many seem a little outdated as they are set in the 1920s and 1930s, the first one having been first published in the mid-1920s and a quick succession of volumes following it. They are aimed at young adults and as such don't make for heavy reading. Dixon's flowing writing style keeps the action coming throughout the books.
The Hidden Harbor Mystery is available from amazon.co.uk either as an individual book, part of 3 stories in 1 series or as a hardback copy, and the prices range from 1p to around the £8 mark depending on which version you want.
