Mr Alfred Polly is in a hole. 'A beastly silly wheeze of a hole' to be precise. He has reached 37 years of age and has nothing to show for it, apart from a failing business and a wife he does not love. In an attempt to escape it all, he starts a fire, planning to die in it, but instead, he saves an old lady and becomes a local hero. Unable to cope with the attention and the life that he has to face if he stays, he makes sure his wife is left with plenty of money from the insurance and takes off. After weeks of wandering, he comes across an inn in the middle of the countryside, owned by a lady who offers him a job. Will Mr Polly be able to change his life around? Or will ...
