Time to set the record straight, these books have been seen as having cult status, mostly due to the frankly awful television adaptations and Hollywood film which simply could not do justice to such an intricate, compelling creation which Douglas Adams has crafted. The genre would be considered science fiction/comedy, and despite this not being a mainstream genre so to speak, it actually works brilliantly. Its intelligent, subtle and often dark humour. Think Black Adder (the BBC television series starring Rowan Atkinson) in space.
