In the 1930's as America was going through the depression Stanley Perlman bought a house in San Francisco. Built by the Alexandre de Beaumont in the 1920's for his wife Lilli, the house was sold after his wife had run off with another man and he had lost everything in the 1929 stock crash. Stanley moved into the servant's quarters in the attic, intending to renovate the house but he never did and the house remained empty until after Stanley's death.
Stanley's heirs sell the house to his lawyer Sarah, who falls in love with the house. Sarah then discovers a family connection to the house. She then begins to restore the house and breathes life back into it. As she does her relationship with her boyfriend begins to disintegrate and she becomes more involved with Jeff Parker her architect on the project.
This is a lovely story of hope and love, a house and a woman who need to find the right person to bring them to life. As she progresses with the project she finds out more about herself, her family and Lilli. My only issue with this book is the back story regarding Lilli, it is never told in depth and we only find out bits and pieces. I suppose this is realistic but I found it quite frustrating.
Having said that this was an enjoyable read, and Danielle Steel fans will love it.
