The Innocents Abroad - Mark Twain ... mid-nineteenth century. Twain's perspective was fresh and irreverent: tour guides, he writes, 'interrupt every dream, every pleasant train of thought, with their tiresome cackling' and the saints on the Cathedral of Notre Dame are 'battered and broken-nosed old fellows'. As unimpressed by American manners as he is by European attitudes, Twain concludes that 'human nature is very much the same all over the world'.

A Connecticut Yankee at King Arthur's Court - Mark Twain

Premium Review Biting satire from America's greatest author (521 words)
by JonnyM79 - written on 31/03/02 (Very useful, 158 readings)
Rating:

Mark Twain has gone down in history as one of the greatest (possibly THE greatest) writer that the USA has yet produced. His masterworks and best known books are normally thought to be Tom Sawyer, and in particular Huckleberry Finn, with its daring comments about social values and slavery, wrapped up in a charming and action-packed story. A Yankee at the Court of King Arthur (its original title when published in London), was written between 1886 and 1889, a turbulent period in Twain's (or Samuel Clemens' - his real name) life. Huckleberry Finn had been published the year before. Far from being instantly acknowledged as a classic it was even banned ...

Tom Sawyer was one of my favourite books as a child. This was because it manages to combine excitement, interest and action throughout the whole story. There is never a dull moment and I was totally enraptured from beginning to end. The adventures star Tom as a young boy in the deep south in America and his experiences with a young black boy, who ...

Tom Sawyer - what a scamp :-) (423 words)
by - written on 08/09/00
Rating:

Tom Sawyer is a small boy living in a Southern village in the 18th century. The story itself isn`t that good, the plot isn`t termendous but it serves to tie the book together. I found the book to be essentially a series of stories about the adventures of one boy, Tom Sawyer, with a number of his friends, addequately tied together with the plot. Don`t get me wrong - the book isn`t bad by any possible stretch of the imagination. I think the plot could have been better contrived and tied the stories together better, but it is still an excellent book. I`m sure everyone can sympathise with the boys feelings as they play, and remember the lessons they learn. Tom runs away from ...
