Marina Lu’s killing outside the shopping mall where she has been choosing bridesmaids’ dresses is, to start with, just another story for LA Times reporter Eve Diamond. She thinks about how to milk it to hold readers’ attention a little longer as she writes it up, the 17 year old girl shot while she was planning her wedding, but it at first it seems like just another case in Los Angeles, a city where there is more than one murder every hour. Eve’s job at a bureau in the San Gabriel Valley suburbs of the city also involves covering the school beat, and research on another possible feature takes her to meet a youth worker.
