Advantages: Entertaining, Lots Going On
Disadvantages: A Bit Far Fetched
'The Jester' is actually a collaboration between detective crime thriller writer James Patterson and his colleague Andrew Cross. I think James Patterson needed to call on a co-writer for this one because it's a little bit different to what he usually writes.
Hugh Deluc is the main character of this book and he's mad as anything to start out with. His medieval village has been invaded and his wife has been abducted by the knights who pillaged it. The title of the book comes from the fact that Hugh enters the castle dressed as a Jester in a bid to rescue his wife. I don't want to give the game away about what happens but basically you can expect loads of different themes to come into play throughout this book.
I love all the little twists and turns in this book and the way James Patterson has done something so very different from what he normally writes. I don't know much about French history so I don't know whether or not this is historically accurate but I felt like it was as I read it. I think it's like when you watch those Robin Hood like dramas on the telly - you know people probably didn't really live like that but you don't care because it's good fun to watch. It's the same with this book, I didn't care if people really did the things James Patterson writes that they did - it was good fun to read.
I've seen reviews on Amazon saying that some people think a lot of silly things happen in this book but I really do feel that those people should remember there's a big difference between history books and fictitious stories. It's important to note that the events in this book are a bit far-fetched if you're the kind of person that's bothered by it though.
I personally think this is a really good read. It's fun, it's interesting and you can't help but keep turning the pages well after you know you should have put the book down and got some sleep. The characters are really different and interesting in this book and the descriptions really make you feel like you're part of what's going on.
Four stars from me.
