Have you ever noticed how some genres of writing habitually seem to inhabit certain points in the fictional timeline? Fiction set in the Regency period tends to be of the gentile, romantic variety, concerned with little more than fashion and flirtation, debutantes, dancing and polite conversation. Historical crime novels, on the other hand, seem to inhabit other distinct periods, which have a darker reputation about them: the Medieval (such as Susanna Gregory and Michael Jecks) and the Victorian (e.g. James McCreet, Andrew Taylor) in particular standing out, but with the Tudor period (notably CJ Sansom) becoming increasingly popular for these works.
