Dragonsong - Anne McCaffrey

Rating:
that were created from the fire lizards. A tripartite system of Holds (land owning, farming communities), Halls (craft groups) and Weyrs (The Dragons and their riders) is the backdrop to Anne McCaffrey’s Pern tales. A short chapter condenses this history into a prologue for this book, giving the reader a fair grasp of the context of the story, whether or not they have read the previous books. This seems to me like an excellent way of transporting readers to that sort of simple romantic environment that good fantasy summons up so well and explaining the presence of mythical dragons. Her back drops, like her characters are slightly hyper-real and fairly extreme, but ...

The Skies of Pern - Anne McCaffrey
by Alindrail - written on 09/03/01 (Useful, 84 readings)
Rating:
This is the latest in the mammoth Pern saga by Anne McCaffrey. This book returns to events following the Dolphins of Pern (persuant to All the Weyrs of Pern), with the repercussions following the death of Aivas and the introduction of the rediscovered technology of the Ancients. Basically there are a group of dissenters who resent the perceived destruction of their way of life. They blame society's ills and even a natural disaster of Aivas and the dragonriders. McCaffrey weaves the tail of the dissenters with that of the natural disaster that strikes the planet. Amongst all this is the background of what the dragonriders are now going to do since Thread is no ...

The Skies of Pern - Anne McCaffrey

dead for you, you need to go find a new favourite author, and the author needs to go live out in the country and raise chickens or something. With Anne McCaffrey I reached that point with Skies Of Pern. It s part of the enormously successful Pern series - a science fiction series about people riding dragons to fight a man-eating alien fungus. Most of the series is great. This is just painful. The problem is partly that she s tried to stuff too many storylines into one book (and most of them are bad). There s a tsunami. There are people protesting the sudden advancement of technology - a storyline that could have been GREAT if she had given them personalities rather ...
