The Lake - Richard Laymon ... excitement by the lake. Maybe she'll find it in the arms of the handsome boy who rows her out to the abandoned beach house. Or maybe she'll stumble into a legacy of terror which will shatter her life...Eighteen years on, Deana has no knowledge of her mother's troubled past and not that much interest. She just wants to make out somewhere cool with her boyfriend - to let her hair down and live a little. If only living were that simple. But that summer at the lake casts a long shadow. And when the horrors of the past meet the perils of the present, both mother and daughter are plunged into a nightmare of blood and terror from which there is no escape.

... and gains strength from his good-natured way of protecting her and Deana from the mad man. He pops round all the time, bringing flowers and soon his relationship with Leigh is more than just as a protector. Is Mace all he seems though? I read the first three chapters of this book and found myself actually pretty scared. Books don’t do that to me usually and I read Stephen King, Dean Koontz and other books in the horror genre. I decided early on that this would be an afternoon or early bath book! The part that real...more

Crowned Review The Lake - Richard Laymon: "Ah'm a-comin' to getcha, baby.....". (936 words)

Rating:

I brought this book following a review on Dooyoo that really captured my interest and I am so glad I read that review. It’s 1968 and Leigh West is a young rebellious teenager, shipped off to her Aunt & Uncle’s house by the lake for the summer, following a series of events at home that have made her parents come to this decision. After a few days of rest and relaxation Leigh begins to yearn for some male company, and when Charlie comes on the scene she is in her element. A young, handsome and fit boy for her to seduce and “play” with all summer. But tragedy strikes on their third meeting and he dies in tragic and terrible circumstances leaving Leigh with ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review REVENGE IS A DISH BEST SERVED OLD (761 words)
by - written on 19/09/06 (Very useful, 153 readings)
Rating:

“Revenge is always the weak pleasure of a little and narrow mind” It’s the summer of 68 and Leigh’s parents are at their wits end at her wayward behaviour, the final straw being her arrest at an anti Vietnam War rally. It seems nothing can stop her on the destructive route she has taken so an idea is hatched whereby she will spend the remainder of the summer at her Aunt and Uncles house overlooking Lake Wahconda. Initially reticent Leigh soon changes her mind when she arrives at the Lake in all of its glorious detail, with a summer of swimming and sunbathing ahead of her Leigh could get to rather enjoy the whole setup. Her spirits are further raised when she ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review The Lake - Richard Laymon: Sex, Violence - Another Richard Laymon Book (1233 words)
by - written on 26/04/06 (Very useful, 114 readings)
Rating:

After all my reviews of children's books I thought I would try writing one for the adults out there. This is not one to read to your little kiddiewinkles. ***The Author*** Richard Laymon died on Valentine's Day, 2001 at the age of just 54, but as with a lot of authors he had finished works available and this is one of them. He wrote over 30 novels as well as even more short stories. His genre was horror and he was well known for lots of gory bits in there as well as a lot of sexual experiences too. After all sex and violence sells, especially when it's accompanied by a good story. That's one thing that stands out with his books is that there is ...  Read the complete review
