The last volume of the Alan Clark diaries charts the final decade in the life of the colourful and 'maverick' politician. Although he never achieved his political ambitions he was suprised to find that his published diaries drew much acclaim. Today Alan Clark is best remembered as a brilliant and indiscreet diarist. 'The Last Diaries' begin in 1991 and end in 1999, five weeks before Clark died of a brain tumour. His wife Jane takes over the diary at the very end of the book to chronicle the last weeks before his death.
