Crowned Review The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen - Alan Moore: "A rousing work of adventure!" (1889 words)
by - written on 04/08/09 (Very useful, 130 readings)
Rating:

When most people talk about comics they mean the children's comics of their youth, 'The Dandy' or 'The Beano' or the American superhero publications and are rather dismissive of the literary worth of these. They almost never consider the other major type of the genre the graphic novel or adult comic. In the rest of Europe and the USA this literary form has a long and respected history but in Britain it is only in recent years that this form of literature has a gained some well deserved respect. One of the most well known of the British graphic novelist is Alan Moore whose collaborations with various comic book artists like Kevin O'Neill, David Lloyd and ...  Read the complete review

'London. 1898. The Victorian Era draws to a close and the twentieth century approaches. It is a time of great change and an age of stagnation, a period of chaste order and ignoble chaos. It is an era in need of champions.' The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is a graphic novel written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Kevin O'Neill. It was first published as a comic series in 1999. Set in 1898, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen can best be described as a Victorian era steampunk version of The Justice League with the big twist being that in this universe fictional characters from the world of literature are real. So when the British Empire is threatened by ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen - Alan Moore: The Invisible Man and Mr Hyde - together at last! (1292 words)
by - written on 31/03/03 (Very useful, 487 readings)
Rating:

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is a comic, or graphic novel if you prefer. You probably don't like comics; they're only for children, after all. Your loss, frankly. While it's true that most English-language comics are indeed aimed at children, and also that many that claim to be aimed at adults are in fact infantile drivel, there is a surprisingly large number of comics for grown-ups that are actually very good. I've been reading them for years, and have occasionally attempted to persuade you, the readers of dooyoo, to sample them too. Which I'm going to assume you haven't done, but that's OK. League of Extraordinary ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review good introduction to moore's work (253 words)
by - written on 31/01/09 (Very useful, 18 readings)
Rating:

I bought this book when I heard that a film of it was being made and wanted to read it first. And I am glad that i did - the book is much, much better! what did i like about this comic - lots! it's set in a fantasy stylised "historic" period - sort of early 1900s but with technological advances beyond even our ken now. The characters are introduced in a series of short flashbacks with a little backstory although more is revealed throughout the story. The graphics are very good, with different styles being employed throughout the book. i like the use of colour and framing and often the lack of text allows the graphics to speak for ...  Read the complete review
