The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid - Bill Bryson ... his mother sent him to school in lime-green Capri pants. Others think it all started with his discovery, at the age of six, of a woollen jersey of rare fineness. Across the moth-holed chest was a golden thunderbolt. It may have looked like an old college football sweater, but young Bryson knew better. It was obviously the Sacred Jersey of Zap, and proved that he had been placed with this innocuous family in the middle of America to fly, become invisible, shoot guns out of people's hands from a distance, and wear his underpants over his jeans in the manner of Superman. Bill Bryson's first travel book opened with the immortal line, 'I come from Des Moines. Somebody had to.' In his deeply funny new memoir, he travels back in time to explore the ordinary kid he once was, and the curious world of 1950s America. It was a happy time, when almost everything was good for you, including DDT, cigarettes and nuclear fallout. This is a book about growing up in a specific time and place. But in Bryson's hands, it becomes everyone's story, one that will speak volumes - especially to anyone who has ever been young.

It's hard to imagine how life can have been hard in late 50's America, with a glut of money and industry left over from the war, and a hope and belief in superiority that Europe wouldn't feel for several decades yet, but for a pre-teen, the usual travails of school life, the weird distractions and obsessions of older siblings and trying to keep oneself amused still existed here, and the author really drags you through his more trying moments, as w...more

Premium Review The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid - Bill Bryson: Zap! The Thunderbolt Kid strikes again! (537 words)
by - written on 21/01/08 (Very useful, 100 readings)
Rating:

This latest instalment from Bryson matches all his previous works in side-splitting humour and irreverent observation, only this time from the point of view of his childhood years, as opposed to his early Travelogues and his recent tome about the Earth's History and Science. Our eponymous Thunderbolt Kid describes his vain attempts to vaporise an array of Teachers, relatives and other annoying people whilst growing up in Des Moines, Iowa ('Somebody had to', he famously quotes). An identity given to himself to protect his fragile youth from the evil of grown-ups, the Thunderbolt Kid is a real insight into the painful trials of young ...  Read the complete review

Introduction --------------- Travel writer and author Bill Bryson recalls his childhood in Des Moines, Iowa The Book ------------- Over the years, Bill Bryson has become renowned as a humorous travel writer. However, his last couple of books suggest he has given this up and is now concentrating on other areas. The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid looks at what life was like in the 1950s, from both the perspective of growing up in Iowa, and looking at the changes which affected America. Bryson’s books tend to be a mixture of funny anecdotes and informative stories, often little known facts. This one follows that pattern in ...  Read the complete review
