Description: ISBN 0140108963 / Author: Raymond Chandler / Genre: Crime / Thriller / Philip Marlowe's on a case: his client, a dried-up husk of a woman, wants him to recover a rare gold coin called a Brasher Doubloon, missing from her late husband's collection. That's the simple part. It ... more
The Little Sister - Raymond Chandler ... becomes more complicated when Marlowe finds that everyone who handles the coin suffers a run of very bad luck: they always end up dead. That's also unlucky for a private investigator, because leaving a trail of corpses around LA gets cops' noses out of joint. If Marlowe doesn't wrap this one up fast, he's going to end up in jail or worse, in a box in the ground.

Obviously, they were contemporary at the time of writing, but they provide a fascinating insight into the attitudes of the time, the clothes (according to Chandler, there was an explosion of colour in what we think of as a black-and-white world) although the key storylines are very relevant today. The Long Good-bye - Raymond Chandler

Premium Review The King of 'noir' (781 words)

Introduction As a fan of crime fiction, I’m ashamed to admit that this is the first time I have ever read a book by Raymond Chandler. Having read various glowing reviews of this book in particular, I finally got around to picking up a copy from my local library. It is immediately obvious why Chandler is known as the epitome of ‘noir’ – this novel is very dark and cynical – and this, coupled with a very complex story, makes it a book that needs a great deal of concentration to fully understand. The author Raymond Chandler was born in Chicago, but grew up in England and studied international law in France and Germany. He then returned to the US and served in the First ...
