I purchased my first Spike Milligan book, “The Looney” in a secondhand book shop for $5. I paid $5 because after reading the first two pages of the book, I was hooked….and sure enough, after taking it home and reading it through, I have to admit this was one of the funniest and most entertaining books I have ever read. It started: “In the beginning God created heaven and earth with, it would appear, Irish labour. It took the Lord six days, and on the seventh he rested, during which time speculative builders put up Kilburn.” Kilburn is where one Mick Looney lives, an Irish dropkick whose fantasies of being of royal blood are out of sync with the depressing reality of his ...
