The Lore of the Land - Jennifer Westwood, Jacqueline Simpson ... through the countryside and you will almost certainly brush up against some deep-rooted local legend - whether it's the pub that claims to have given lodgings to Dick Turpin, or the haunted stately home, or the hill that is supposed to contain buried treasure, or the grave that is said to mark the last resting place of Robin Hood. This magnificent new and lavishly illustrated survey looks at all these stories, county by county, explaining when they date from, how they arose and what basis - if any - they have in fact. If you want to know how Devil's Dyke in Sussex got its name, or why medieval stories link King Arthur with Lanercost Priory in Cumberland, or where Cornish legends about the evil Jan Tregeagle come from, then The Lore of the Land will provide the answers and show you at the same time just how deeply embedded in our culture these legends have become.

A thematic approach might have worked better, though there is an index of tale types that allows the reader to compare, for example, all the stories about hangmen. This in not a guidebook: there are no detailed maps and directions and in many places there is nothing actually to see. As a child, I did visit one haunted site, Little Lawford, regularly, but despite much wishful thinking I ne...more

Premium Review The Lore of the Land - Jennifer Westwood, Jacqueline Simpson: A potpourri of English legends (405 words)
by - written on 18/12/09 (Very useful, 6 readings)
Rating:

England is a land of folk tales, and this book includes hundreds of them from every county. It is organised alphabetically by county, and each section is prefaced by a map showing approximately the location of churches and holy wells, hill figures and witches, speaking skulls and other supernatural happenings. The authors are experienced folklorists who have attempted to use the earliest source for each entry, and a comprehensive bibliography is provided. The unembroidered tales are allowed to speak for themselves, though the descriptions can be a little humourless. Within each county, entries are listed alphabetically by place, which means that a description ...  Read the complete review

Rating:

If you're an adventurous soul, and feel inclined to hunt out the quirky places, people and tales that make up the threads that weave together the folklore of our culture, then this book is utterly essential. Painstakingly put together through many years of devotion and research Westwood and Simpson have created an indispensable guide to the legends and stories that have grown through generations of telling, their origins, and their meanings. The book is divided into chapters by county, and spends roughly an equal amount of time on each county in turn. Whether the tales be those of haunted houses and ghosts (like the spectral hanged highwayman at Clibbon's ...  Read the complete review
