Advantages: A down to earth book covering his life from a youngster to an old man
Disadvantages: N/A
I am not a person who reads many (if any) fiction books. I really like to read books that educate me in some way. For this reason I often read factual books or biographies. This particular book I read for the first time back in 1993, just after it had been brought out. It was a hardback book and if I remember correctly it cost me about £18 at the time. But why this particular book??
Well the main reason is that John Moores is a legend in the area were I live - Liverpool. He did a great job in building up his businsses including the Pools, Catalogues, Stores etc and was responsible for creating thousands and thousands of jobs in the community. Not only that he was also a huge Everton FC fan who would attend many games, even until his eighties.
Unlike many millionaires of today John Moores had values. These certainly are in the minority in todays day and age. He also believed in hard work and looking after his employees. He was one of the first employers to have a private health scheme in order to help his employees, who fell ill. One particular reference in the book that sticks in my mind is when John Moores daughter found an envelope delivered to their house without the stamp franked. She suggested to her father that they reuse the stamp. Her father immediately explained to her that when you buy a stamp, you pay for a service. As the letter had been delivered the service had been carried out. He subsequently threw away the stamp. That was the kind of person John Moores was.
As mentioned previously John Moores was an Everton Fan and the book was happy to explain how he gained an interest in the club, which I found interesting. It also went on to explain how in 1960 and how in 1970 he was given freeman of the city. In 1972 he was given a CBE and in 1980 given a nighthood.
The book itself covered his life from a young boy all the way up until he was an old man (shortly before he died).
Sir John Moores died the month after his book was first published, although it was actually written by a ghost writer. I found it extremely interesting and a very easy book to read. I've actually read it a few times. That tells you how good it was.
The book can be bought on Amazon second hand for 0.01p plus p&p. It comes highly recommended.
Summary: A fantastic read
