I can't walk past a map, old or new, without taking a few minutes to absorb some of the information contained within. Anyone with a passing curiosity for cartography in general will find The Map Book, edited by Peter Barber, a very interesting read. The book is great 'coffee table' material, being hardback, full-colour and a couple of inches larger than A4 in size. The Map Book takes the reader on a journey through the history of civilisation, detailing maps initially from the most crude, transcribed on to whatever materials are at hand, through to the intricate, exact, factual documents found in modern times.
