Advantages: 12 good stories all written by some of the best writters out there
Disadvantages: Stories can be a bit short
If you thought you had seen everything there is to do with the Matrix franchise then you may yet be wrong as I doubt you've read these comics.
Now as a Matrix fan I have played every game, own the 3 films as well as the Animatrix, and then I came across this title. Originally published on the Matrix's website this volume showcases 12 of the short stories from the series (4 stories from each of the 3 series). These stories were all written and drawn by different teams, all adding their own personal take on the Matrix universe.
Just before you say this is just putting the films into comic form I'd like to point out in this volume there is only two mentions of any of the characters from the films; the Oracle is mentioned, and Morpheus (as a child) briefly pops up.
These are all standalone stories that tie in with what the films tell us but always include something new and different. Whether its the story telling us about the plight of the scavengers having to find resources on the surface while remaining undetected, or the short story about the first robot to commit murder.
I thoroughly enjoyed this volume especially due to it's wide variety of stories that are all bite size so you can read it slowly, a story a night maybe. The writers and artists that appear in this book each gives us a little treat that reminds us what a well written trilogy it really was.
One cool thing about these comics is that in volume 2 there are 3 stories that are set during the truce between the machines and humans (after the 3rd film). As a fan of the films these stories were a nice epilogue to trilogy.
Summary: A must read for fans of the animatrix
