The Memoirs of Field Marshal Montgomery, the most famous and controversial British General to emerge in World War 2, was first published in 1958. While other military memoirs from the era, most notably Defeat Into Victory by General William Slim - the celebrated commander of the 14th Army in Burma during the war - were praised for their modesty and admirable restraint for throwing mud around, Montgomery's memoirs were considered rather arrogant and tactless and famously ended his friendship with Eisenhower who, while always expressing affection for his charming personality, Monty casually dismisses at several points in the book as an annoying amateur in the field of ...
