Advantages: Taut writing and illustration

Disadvantages: a bit slow at first

Sequel to a gripping and original kids book featuring Cats.

This must not be easy to pull off, but the rich atmosphere and yet simple, exciting narrative ensured the first one was a success. It also featured the scratchy, lean, impressive illustrations from visionary graphic artist Dave Mckean (see Mirrormask and other Neil Gaiman collaborations).

The world of cats in fact is described how it must be: an often edgy, brutal, cutthroat place. However, this means that the good aspects, such as the friendships that Varjak makes along the way, with dogs etc, are all the more potent. We also have the mystique of Martial Arts, that gives Varjak the edge to make it as a street wandering cat....Again, interesting and well-described. Great for kids, who love this stuff.

Everyone I hope has read 'White Fang' by Jack London. What a classic. Well, this one no way as extensive, but it is set in the real world, and makes the experience of being a cat for awhile a memorable and exciting one for kids.


This sequel is more of the same, and not quite as good as the first one really. However, it manages well to develop things a bit further, and familiar characters return to the scene. Such as Cludge the dog, who's quality. It's nice to see a book that is not 'dumbed down' for kids, but also has the reason there too, such as about trying your best, and not surrendering. About standing up for yourself etc...


Great stuff. These 2 books: dark but highly recommended.
