... the outside it sounds like a typical 'holiday' read, something that is easy, entertaining and not too taxing on the brain. However, to give the author credit, it is more interesting than I at first thought. The main characters are Ida and May. The story of Ida is dominant in the first part of the novel and then it slowly moves on to May, the pirates daughter. They are extreme opposites and have that typical mother/daughter love/hate relationship. Ida is initially over protective of her true love's child, more conce...more

Crowned Review The Pirate's Daughter - Margaret Cezair-Thompson: A Swashbuckling Tale? Not really! (782 words)

Rating:

The year is 1946, and Errol Flynn the movie star, is washed ashore in his boat, Zaca, onto the tropical island of Jamaica. Finding Jamaica a beautiful haven, away from all the Hollywood hype, he decides to buy Navy Island, a small Isle set off from the town of Port Antonio. Here, Errol entertains Hollywood stars and other famous and wealthy friends. He also, falls for young Ida, a sixteen year old mixed race 'girl', and gets her pregnant. May is born, the forgotten child of Errol Flynn. He is not interested (or rather has already been in trouble with having underage sex in America), and quickly escapes the problem, by moving on with his life, and leaving Ida and May to ...  Read the complete review

The Pirate's Daughter by Margaret Cezair- Thompson This was a Richard and Judy Summer Read book that I picked up for a £1 from Derby market before leaving for Australia because I thought it looked quite a thick book which would keep me amused for a little while. On the front cover is a palm leaf hanging over the left corner then the title in r and at the bottom a beach with a sailing boat off shore and a young girl in a straw hat on the sand. In a piece of sky are these words " 1946 Hollywood comes to Jamaica, bringing adventure and glamour". The story is based loosely on the fact that Errol Flynn lived on an island off Jamaica ...  Read the complete review

I've just finished reading a brilliant book and wanted to share it with you. It's a Richard and Judy summer read so guaranteed to be a good one. It's called The Pirate's Daughter by Margaret Cezair - Thompson. It's described on the back of the book as this: "When legendary swashbuckler Errol Flynn washes ashore in his yacht to Jamaica, teenaged Ida Joseph makes it her business to meet him. For Flynn, Jamaica is a revelation: a tropical paradise that promises adventure and a fresh start; when he and Ida do meet, he is intrigued by her poise and singles her out for attention. Soon Flynn has made a home for himself on Navy Island where he entertains the ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Excellent book, I loved every page (182 words)
by - written on 10/02/09 (Useful, 27 readings)
Rating:

The Pirate's Daughter is a charming story and yet sad. It tells the story of Errol Flinn's Daughter, May, however the first half of the book really centres around her mother, Ida, and how she came to know and love Erol. I hasten to add though this is not a love story but a tale of love, and family and knowing/realising who you are. Encompasing this is a whole new insite into the country of Jamaica, its history and the effects on its people of issues such as the black/white divide and appartite. You really get a feel of the beauty of this country even if you have never visited. I found myself being drawn right into the place and the storyline, the entire adventure and ...  Read the complete review

A couple of new ideas Not a great deal of depth

Fascinating, bearing in mind the background A slow, painful read

Excellent - Carter at her Best Warning: Sexually Explicit and Occasionally Gruesome
