The Runes of the Earth - Stephen Donaldson ... the publication of THE CHRONICLES OF THOMAS COVENANT THE UNBELIEVER, Donaldson took the world of fantasy publishing by storm, and created a true phenomenon: an epic fantasy instant bestseller that has gone on to sell millions. The 'hero', Thomas Covenant, is mysteriously struck down with a disease believed eradicated; he is abandoned by his wife and young son and becomes a pariah. Alone and despairing, Covenant falls - and is drawn into a mysterious new world, where gentle people work magic and the earth itself brings healing. He is welcomed as the reincarnation of a legendary saviour, but Covenant refuses to believe; he's convinced he's having delusions. At the end of the sixth book, as Covenant battles to save the world, he is killed - in both worlds - as Dr Linden Avery, his horrified companion, looks on. Now comes the book every fantasy reader has been waiting for. It's ten years later, and Linden Avery thought she would never see the Land, or Covenant, her beloved, again. But Lord Foul has stolen her adopted son, and is unmaking the very laws of nature. And though she believes Covenant dead, he keeps sending Linden messages: 'Find me', and 'Don't trust me'. The Land is in turmoil, and Lord Foul has plans for them all.

Premium Review The Runes of the Earth - Stephen Donaldson: Thomas Covenant is back...or is he? (1426 words)
by - written on 07/07/09 (Very useful, 82 readings)
Rating:

I first read the original Chronicles of Thomas Covenant many years ago and thoroughly enjoyed them. They were a different kind of more adult fantasy series and extremely well written. In order to review this latest instalment of the Thomas Chronicle series it is important to put it into context. The original series spanned 6 books the first three are The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever: 'Lord Foul's Bane', 'Ill earth War' and 'Power That Preserves' the second trilogy is The Second Chronicles of Thomas Covenant: 'Wounded Land', 'One Tree' and 'White Gold Wielder'. This latest instalment 'The Runes of the Earth' is the first book in new trilogy ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review The return of a brilliant epic! The beginning of best ending ... (782 words)

This Review is purly based on the principle that you need to have read the other books first. I never drempt that this story could go any further! After first finding a copy of the first three books in my parents attic i was hooked. I then began a frantic search for the next three to see the story finished, when i found them it was great! An epic adventure that tore through the nature of illness and despair, showing how a baptism of fire can bring out the best and selfsacrifice in the lowest of human beings. Covenant was the most unlikliest of all heros, with no belief in himself it lead to his victory over adversity and saviour of ...  Read the complete review
