Many many attempts have been made at solidifying the Arthurian legends into fiction. Some more successful than others. My personal favourite is the Stephen Lawhead series, in which the author links Atlantis with Merlin, and goes back to the very very beginning. I was sceptical when I picked up 'The seeing stone' in my library, most of the decent children's adaptations of the legends are poor reworkings of a familiar story, usually adding little to refresh the legends. The Once and future king is probably the best known children's version, famously having been the inspiration for the Disney 'The Sword in the Stone'.
