Bernard Cornwell's series of books about the Peninsular War, featuring Richard Sharpe, have proven enormously popular and have even been made into a successful television series starring Sean Bean. The books' success is, I believe, due to the marrying of stories of high adventure, with the historical facts of the various battles fought between the British, French and Spanish between 1809 and 1815.
