The smelly book by Babette Cole.
The dirtiest most disgusting book I have ever read.

Babette Cole born in 1950 has an honours degree in art from Canterbury; she has worked with the B B C drawing art work for Jackanory and other programmes. Babette has also illustrated and written many children’s books which I love reading to children. One of those books is the smelly book. If you wish to read more about Babette Cole and her work visit http://www.babette-cole.com/publications.html

The smelly book was first published in1987. The copy I rescued from the charity shop is a picture lion’s publication from 1992. The R R P is £5.99 but I note Amazon have it for £4.99. The ISBN number is 10018704

The Smelly book has 29 pages of smelly fun. Babette Coles illustrations are bright lively, expressive, not fussy easy to look at and understand.

On one of the pages there is a picture of a dog rolling around “in smelly things on the ground” by the expression on the dogs face and the way the dog is positioning his legs you really can imagine a dog really doing this and the fun he is having, then there is a picture of this dog having rolled around in smelly things jumping up at his master. The way the man is drawn recoiling from the dogs advances is great it’s real.
There are many humorous illustrations in this book the lady holding the “smelly dishes “has a peg on her nose. The look of horror and disgust on mums face when the muck spreading tractor sprays its muck on them from the next field when the family are picnicking.
Oh yes the pictures are good lots her to talk about with your children and a non reader can understand the story from just the pictures.

This book is not just a picture book, it does contain script there are between 3 and 10 words per page.
Each page is fun if you read the “smelly” words they are simple descriptive words written in rhyme “Smelly things attract the flies, especially very old pork pies.”
“Camels have a horrid pong, warthogs can smell quite strong.”

The smelly events in this book are quite silly they appeal to a child’s sense of humour (and mine.)

I would recommend this book to children aged from 4 to about 7 yrs old. Sometimes when I am reading it I will take some “smelly things” (nice smells and nasty smells) for the group to smell. This makes for a fun time.

Enjoy reading to/with your children if reading is fun you will encourage them to read on their own.

Summary: A fun book for children about smelly things .
