Advantages: Fun book for confident readers
Disadvantages: Not for smaller children
The Sneetches and Other Stories is another book by Dr Seuss. The cover of the book is bright green and has a picture of 3 Sneetches and a reed and white striped banner going down the left hand side. The title is at the top in bright red lettering. The back cover of the book is yellow and has a paragraph telling us about the book and at the bottom is a description about yellow back books and how they are ideal for fluent readers and great fun for practicing reading out loud.
The Sneetches
The book begins by telling us about the Sneetches ad how some of them are star bellied and have a green star on their bellies and how some are not, they are called pain bellies. The stars were only small so you would think that it did not matter if you had one or not but the star bellied Sneetches always bragged about being the best and they would have noting to do with the plain bellied Sneetches. Even the star bellied children would be spiteful and not play with the plain bellied ones. The plain bellied Sneetches were always left out in the cold or on the dark beaches when the star bellied ones would have a party.
One day when the plain bellied Sneetches were moping alone on the beach a stranger whizzed past them driving the strangest of cars. He called out 'my friends' and announced his name. He said he had heard of their troubles and that he was the fix-it chappie who had come to help.
Would the stranger be able to help the plain bellied Sneetches and bring them all together or would the plan backfire?
The Zax
The next story in this book is called The Zax, this story tells the tale of two Zax, one North going Zax and one South going Zax.
The two Zax finally came to a place where they finally met, they stood face to face and foot to foot. Neither of the Zax would move and blamed the other one for blocking their path. They both stood their ground and the North going Zax declared that he would not change his ways even if he had to stand there for fifty nine days!
Would either of the Zax go off their path to allow the other to pass or would they both stand face to face and toe to toe for the full fifty nine days?
Too Many Dave's
This story tells about Mrs McCave and how she had twenty three sons and they were all called Dave. When she goes outside and asks Dave to come to the house she ends up having all twenty three charge upon the house. She then goes on to wish that when they were born she had given them all different names.
Would she be able to keep calling them Dave or was it too late to change their name?
What was I Scared of?
This is the story of a bunny type creature who is walking through the woods because he is never afraid. When he was deep inside the woods he suddenly spied a pair of green trousers, he was not scared but he did wonder what a pair of trousers was doing standing on their own in the woods at night. All of a sudden the trousers started to move and he did become a bit scared and his heart started making a thump.
Would he stay to find out what the trousers were doing or would b=he finally be scared and run from the wood?
This is a wonderful book from Dr Seuss and the stories included are all very fun and enjoyable. The Sneetches is the longest of the stories and the following two are only a few pages long but the final story is a bit longer than the other two.
All of the stories are written with rhyming words which makes it fun to read and the children enjoy listening to it and my eldest is working hard to try and read this with me. The words are written in nice big black lettering which makes it easy to read but I do have to say that when I have not been concentrating fully I have made a few mistakes with the rhyming words and got some of the mixed up.
The book is ideal for reading as a bed time story as it is split into shorter stories so it does not all have to be read in one go as that would make is a very long reading time.
This book has not been designed as a beginner book but as a follow on book for children who are already confident readers as the words used are not the normal basic ones as Dr Seuss uses in his beginner books.
The stories are all accompanied with nice illustrations which show off the funny looking characters and they do help to read and understand the story. The illustrations do not help my 3 year old with the book and he just looses interest in it straight away but my 6 year old really enjoys listening to it as it has been written for children around his age.
This book was published by Harper Collins Publishers Limited and has a retail price of £4.99 on the back cover. I did not pay this price and got my copy for £2.49 from eBay. They are also available to buy on Amazon with prices ranging between £2.99 and £4.00.
Other Yellow Back books include:-
Daisy-Head Mayzie
Did I ever tell you how lucky you are?
Dr. Seuss Sleep book
Horton Hatches an Egg
How the Grinch Stole Christmas
If I ran the Circus
There are also lots more titles available in the yellow back collection. If you are looking for a book to read to small children then you will be looking for the Blue Back books. For children who are just starting to read on their own then they will be looking at the Green Back books and as this book is for confident readers they will be looking for the yellow back books.
This is a great book with 4 stories for all fans of Dr Seuss to read.
Summary: A fun book by Dr Seuss
