Advantages: A beautifully written, funny and heart wrenching story
Disadvantages: Maybe the movie??
I had heard great things about the Time Traveller's Wife and when I popped into Waterstone's and noticed it was in the three for two offer I thought I would give it a read, and was highly impressed.
The book is based on the relationship of Claire and Henry who met when Claire is just 7 and Henry is 40. Henry is a time traveller and travels both back and forward through time, often to his present - in real time. When Claire meets Henry in the present she has known him for years and loves him, but he doesn't know she exists. This may sound confusing but after a few chapters you definitely get a good understanding of the travelling process.
The book has a great formula as it develops through separate monologues by Claire and Henry. This allows total insight and understanding of the emotions and intentions of the two characters and allows the plot to develop well.
As I enjoyed this book so much I passed it on to my sister who obsessively looked for continuity errors, but did not find any. I think this is not only due to the excellent well thought out plot, but also because of the time travelling itself!
It is clear from the outset that the two characters are madly in love and despite their unorthodox relationship and the difficulty Henry's condition brings, they work out the kinks and their love prevails.
The Time Traveller's Wife is a heart warming and exceptionally funny book, full with emotion and the great contrast of the male and female interpretations of a relationship.
It is beautifully written by Audrey Niffenegger, and I look forward to delving into more of her novels, and of course the movie!
Summary: A wonderful book that I highly recommend!
